Sunday Social

It's time to link up over at A Complete Waste of Makeup for Sunday Social!

Sunday Social

This week's theme is spring...  As I type this I'm watching snow falling outside my living room window.  *sigh*  Spring will get here at some point I guess!

What is your favorite thing about spring?
I love that spring is kind of a fresh start in some ways.  I love the bright, cheerful colors associated with spring!

What is your favorite kind of flowers to grow or receive?
I'm not really successful at keeping flowers alive and I've never really had anyone give me flowers, so this is a hard one.  I still love bright daisies, though!  One of my students brought me hot pink daisies for my birthday a couple months ago and that totally made my day!

What is your favorite nail polish color?
This is a hard one!  I love the purple-y color of Essie's "Bond With Whomever" and last year's fave, China Glaze's "Flip Flop Fantasy" is sure to make quite a few appearances on my nails!

What is your favorite outdoor activity?
I think I mentioned this in the question about summer last week, but I love going to outdoor concerts or the drive-in.  I just like things that are chill and fun to enjoy with friends.

Do you have any fun spring plans?
Nothing really fun on the horizon right now...  I need to change that, though!

Skincare Routine

This blog is just kind of a mixed bag sometimes, but in some ways, I really like that.  I like reading all sorts of blogs, so it kind of fits that my own blog goes with all of my random interests and likes.  I hope you all are okay with putting up with my randomness!

Anyways...

I've shared some of my current makeup favorites and I thought I'd also share some of my favorite skincare items.  My skin isn't perfect, but I try to do what I can to make it behave and slow down any signs of aging.

Current Skincare Favorites

Here are my current favorite items that I'm using on a regular basis:

  1. I've been a longtime fan of Clinique's Acne Solution bar soap.  A bar of this lasts a super long time.  I keep mine in the shower to use on my face as well as my body after workouts.
  2. I used to give my mom all of my Clinique eye cream samples, but I've decided I need to incorporate that into my own skincare routine.  I really like this Clinique Repairwear Intensive Eye Cream and will probably purchase a full-size jar when I finish off my sample.
  3. My old roommate bought a sampler set of The Body Shop's Tea Tree collection and gave me a few items that she wasn't going to use.  This moisturizer is a lightweight gel-ish consistency, that's perfect for wearing under my makeup.
  4. My mom and I have both become Philosophy fans in the past year or so.  I tried a sample of their Microdelivery scrub and decided it was worth the little splurge.  I use it every other day or so in place of my Clarisonic at night and my skin has stayed super smooth.
  5. Oh Clarisonic, how I love thee!  This is probably my biggest beauty splurge, but it was totally worth it!    I bought the Mia 2 and use it everyday!  I think this has been a factor in my skin staying nice in the past few months.
  6. I think Philosophy's Purity Made Simple and the Clarisonic are like a dream team for skincare.  These two give me such a deep clean feeling at the end of the day and really gets all of the makeup off of my face.
  7. I've also become a fan of The Body Shop's nighttime tea tree moisturizer.  It's a little thicker than the daytime version, but it's become a favorite product of mine!
  8. I'm also a longtime fan of Clinique's Clarifying Lotions.  I go back and forth between the Acne Solutions one and the one for oily / combo skin (depending on deals I find).  It's kind of my final step in clean sweeping my face before moisturizer in the morning and evening.
  9. I heard about the Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque on a blog or You Tube a few months back and decided to pick it up.  It's super cheap at Walgreens (or whatever drugstore) and really is a nice product.  I try to use it 1 or 2 evenings a week.

Do you have any recommendations for things I should try in the future?

Fashion Friday Bonus: Cleanin' Out My Closet

It's your lucky day!  TWO posts!

That's what you get when I'm off work for spring break.

Anyway, one of my goals for the week was to clean out my closet.  I got rid of A LOT last summer when I moved, so I really haven't had much left that I felt I wanted to part with.  I found a handful of good items, but that just weren't getting the love that they deserve.

When I clean out my closet, I try on most of the items I pull just to give them one last chance at life.  I had 2 items survive this process...  A brown skirt that I've had since college got to stay because it fits well and is a work-appropriate length.  I used to wear it all the time, but just haven't show it much love lately.  I also kept a gray polka dot Gap dress that I bought on super sale, but have never worn.  It fits pretty well, but I think what it is missing is the right undergarments.  It's very cute, perfect for a wedding, and is worth keeping around.

Here's what didn't make the cut:

I did some major weeding through of my tee collection.  Most of these are still nice tees, but very thin or v-necks that require layering and I'm just not into that much anymore.

These are all nice, dressy tops (several of which unworn), but are just not working for my wardrobe.  The silky purple one is a prime example of why you don't buy things that don't fit.  It's a gorgeous shirt, but too big!

The striped sweater was worn once, I believe, but actually still has the tags.  It's almost made the cut, but isn't quite right on me.  The polka dot cardigan is adorable, but a little too big and looks awkward on me.  I've worn it a few times, but I just don't like how it fits me.

This is actually a cute Banana Republic dress, but it's not very flattering on me and the deep v-neck doesn't work for wearing it to school.  I think it was worn once or twice.  I'm sad to part with it, but I have much better dresses!

This is a skirt and 3 pairs of pants.  Bottoms, particularly dress pants, can be hard for me to find.  I've settled on fit in the past and have learned that it's not worth it to do that.  I'm also not into wide-legged styles much anymore and 2 of those pairs fall into that category.

The Verdict

4 of these items are from Limited...  That's almost everything I own from there.  I've just stopped going into that store most of the time because as cute as their stuff is, most of it just isn't a good fit on my body. I'm between sizes in tops and most of their pants aren't a good fit on me.

In shopping, I need to focus on fit.  I'm actually a lot better on this than I used to be.  As they say on "What Not To Wear," you need to shop for the body you have, not the body you want.  I've been guilty of buying things both a little too big and a little too small.  Not everything will be perfect, but it needs to be close enough that I will actually want to wear the item.

Buying an item for a special event isn't always the best idea.  The green dress?  Purchased the morning before I went to a friend's wedding.  The black and white tunic?  Bought that one for a bridal shower the day of.  A special event doesn't mean an excuse to go shopping if it means you'll end up buying something that you don't love.  When I have a special event now, I try to go with something a bit more versatile and basic OR treat myself to a new accessory or cardigan to spice up a dress I already have.

Cleaning out my closet seasonally helps me become a more discerning shopper.  When I go through items and see what I do and don't wear, it helps me make better decisions on what I want to spend my money on. A few years ago I was really bad about buying cheap items that didn't fit that well.  I now focus on fit AND a bargain, but will pass on something if the fit isn't right or I don't see it being practical for my lifestyle.

Have you done any spring cleaning recently?

How do you choose what to eliminate from your closet?

Fashion Friday: Flower Power

One trend for spring that I've overlooked until recently had been floral prints.  I'm a huge fan of florals in my home decor, but I can pretty much say that is something that is very much not represented in my closet.

One thing that I love about floral prints is that you can pair them up with so many items.  These prints usually have a lot of colors to work with, which allows you a lot of fun possibilities when it comes to pairing it with different items.  I think florals are also great for pattern mixing and can give you some fun options mixing it up in that way.

Flower Power

From Top:

I've been eyeing this pink Aerie tee every time I've worked there in the past couple months.  It's a cute, casual tee, but I've seen several girls dress it up a bit more.

I bought this VS Pink tote (shhh...  don't tell the Aerie girls) before my road trip last month.  I loved the print and it's the perfect road trip tote / teacher bag / beach bag / gym bag / whatever bag.  It's very sunwashed and neon and I just stinkin' love it!

This J.Crew tee is simple and perfect for someone who isn't looking for a crazy pattern.  It would be cute with jeans and flats or dressed up with a skirt and cardigan.

I think accessories are one of the best ways to ease into a trend.  Floral scarves are a great way to embrace this trend without getting too crazy.

I loved this Gap dress online and loved the pattern even more in person.  It wasn't a match made in heaven for me, though, but I still think it's super adorable!

The floral button down from Gap, though, was a winner.  I fell in love with the shirt-dress version, but alas it was HUGE on me.  Thankfully I found the shirt online!  It's out of my element, but I think that's why I'm so excited to have it.

J.Crew's collaboration with Liberty had a lot of (expensive) winners in that collection.  I have a Liberty tote from the Target collaboration a few years back (much more in my price range) and I always get compliments when I carry it.  If you're willing to pay the price, Liberty florals are to die for!

How stinkin' cute are these cosmetic bags from Forever 21?!?  I had to resist the urge to get them!

Have you been loving floral prints this spring?  If so, how have you incorporated them into your wardrobe?

Happy Friday & have a GREAT weekend!

Whole Group Reading: Language & Grammar

I'm working on doing a "miniseries" on here about what my whole group reading block looks like.  (You can go back and read my introductory post here.)

This week I wanted to share a few things I that use on a regular basis for our language and grammar portion of our reading block.  This accounts for about 10 of the 60 minutes each day.  It's sometimes tough to cram in everything into such a short amount of time, but once we get the routines down things run a lot faster!

Each week (unless it's a short week), we work on a skill from this Grammar & Punctuation book from Evan Moor.  (Click here for shopping info.)  It goes through all of the parts of speech, grammar rules, and proper punctuation use.  Depending on the skill, we do 2 or 3 pages throughout the week and I try to pull at least one other activity to go along with that skill.  I try not to bombard the kids with worksheets, but I do feel as though when it comes to these skills there is a lot of value in having the kids work on writing.

Back in the day (pre-blog and Pinterest) I was really active on the teacher message board site Pro-Teacher. I found TONS of task cards on there for a wide range of skills.  Task cards are great for whole group or small group activities.

I found this Grammar Ad Libs (and a math version as well) on clearance at my local teacher store a few years ago.  These are a super fun way for the kids to practice skills.  I like to tie this in with fluency and have the kids go around and read their final paragraphs with their classmates.  They LOVE these!

I think I picked up these "I Have...  Who Has..." cards at Mardel last summer, but they've definitely been a hit with my kids  this year.  This box includes synonyms, antonyms, homographs, and homophones.  These are great to introduce the week we learn a skill and then go back to throughout the year as review.  (There are several books of "I Have... Who Has..." games

Another favorite for my students is Boggle.  If you search "Boggle" on Pinterest (click here for the results) you will find tons of stuff for the classroom!  I try to do Boggle on Fridays and sometime tie it in with our skill for the week.  I'll tell the students to try to make as many nouns as possible or something like that.  Other times, just make as many words as possible.  This can be really challenging for some kids, but once they get the hang of it, most kids really love it!

Do you have any activities you like for teaching language and grammar to your students?  I'd love to get some new ideas and suggestions!

Come back next week for some ideas on vocabulary instruction!

Classroom Pinspiration

We're not even finished with spring break and I'm already starting to think about next school year!  Yup, I'm already getting a to do list made for things I would like to accomplish and make for next year.  Of course, Pinterest is partially to blame for this!  I thought I'd share a few of my biggest pinspirations and how I'm going to incorporate these ideas into my classroom.

I love this arrangement with the round table and stools for group work. I have a "teacher table" (U-shaped table) in my classroom, but I think one like this would be great for when the kids are working on their own on group work.

I really like the drawers for organizing papers. I have baskets for various things right now, but I like the way the drawers hide some of the clutter. These types of drawers are good space savers as well!

These crates are great for the classroom. I have 6 setup as shelving and storage for my Lakeshore collection and other center activities. I really like this idea for storing group supplies so that the kids have things handy and in one convenient place.

For several years I've had the lingering thought that I'd like to come up with more free time activities other than "read your AR book." This is a great idea to give the students choices and it allows you as a teacher to change things up or even let the students select what their choices are going to be.

There's nothing particular that I want to do here, but I just love how organized this classroom looks. It's got a lot going on without being too much... I feel like with my lack of wall space my room can feel very visually cluttered, but at the same time I don't feel like there's much I can do about it.

Are you already planning for next school year?

What projects are on your to do list for next year?

To Do Tuesday: Spring Break Edition

Ahhh spring break...  I love being able to celebrate the end of state assessments with a week off of work.  We actually get Good Friday and the Monday following Easter off as well next week, so I'm doing very little work right now.  (Of course I am doing a little fill-in at my part-time job right now, but I still consider this a break.)

I've slacked on my To Do Tuesday posts over the past month or so, but I wanted to share what I have on my to do list for my days off!

  • Get some spring cleaning done around the house.  I get my place immaculately cleaned and then end up trashing it again as soon as the work week starts.  I try to do a little clean up each night, but sometimes that doesn't happen.  I also want to get some hard core deep cleaning done as well.
  • Make lesson plans and sketch out units for the rest of this school year.  Now that assessment season is over I can get back to real teaching!  I'm super excited for some of the units and novel studies that we do at the end of the year!
  • Get my workout on!  I have majorly slacked on working out over the past month.  I was sick with the never-ending cold from hell for almost 4 weeks.  Ugh!  This body needs to get in shape for summer clothing because these arms and legs aren't ready to get shown off anytime soon!
What's on your to do list this week?

If you're on spring break, are you trying to be productive, going on vacation, or taking time for relaxation?

Happy Tuesday!
