More School Shopping

I showed off my Target goods the other day, but promised I'd share the rest of my school shopping finds as soon as my Mardel order arrived.  I've done a pretty good job of staying within my budget and I still have my $35 Wal-Mart gift card to use for classroom supplies as well.  Other than nametags, I'm pretty much good to go (or at least I think I am)!  I know that a few little things will pop up when I get back into my classroom next week, but my school usually has a Wal-Mart list running for random supplies that teachers need.  At least for now, I think I'm done with the majority of my shopping.

I'm such a sucker for the Poppin' Patterns collection from Creative Teaching Press.  It's my non-theme theme (more on that in a later post).  I love all of the colors and that it's so mix and match.  I'm not entirely sure what all I'm going to end up doing with everything, but I figured with 20% at both stores I shopped I was okay to go on and grab things now.  I'm eager to get into my classroom and start adding these things to my already extensive collection!  Here's the whole Poppin' Patterns collection online.

Okay, left to right:

There are several things I hoard for my classroom...  Dollar Tree's word strips are one of those things.  It doesn't matter that I have an entire plastic box full of them already sitting in my classroom...  I seriously buy more almost every trip there AND ask for them for Christmas!

Another Dollar Tree find was this parts of speech set.  I've used a poster for the parts of speech the past few years, but it's so small that it's hard to use it for teaching purposes.  I honestly couldn't remember if I already had a bigger parts of speech set (I know I have a similar one for punctuation), so I went on and grabbed this one since it'll be wayyyyy better for the kids to see and since it was only $1.  I hate that my wall space is so limited, but I'm just going to have to find a place for this!

I also found some math cards and black dot calendar pieces.  Neither of these were real needs, but let's just face it, I was in a spending mood and I know both will get used.  I know the math cards will definitely come in handy when I'm doing after school tutoring!

And finally, my super cute t-shirt from Mardel!  It reads "Teachers Give a Hoot!"  I'm not a huge owl fan, but for some reason I thought this one was adorable and I'm always a fan of having extra t-shirts to wear on Fridays.

Even if you missed Mardel's 20% off sale last week, they still have a bunch of items on special and is worth checking out.

Well, other than whatever I end up with getting with my Wal-Mart gift card, that will probably be the extent of my school shopping for now.  There are a few books I'd like to track down, but nothing too urgent right now!

I plan to start working on my classroom next week, so I'll be sure to take plenty of pics of how things come together!  I think this is one of my favorite things about the beginning of the school year!

Happy Saturday!

Classroom on a Budget

This is a post I've been meaning to do for quite some time now, but I just haven't...  As I'm just beginning to  have time to think about next year, I thought this would be a great time to share with you some of my tips for  putting together a classroom on a budget!

One thing that I'm really big on is creating a comfortable classroom environment for my students and I to enjoy. After all, it's where we'll be spending the majority of our time for nine months! I don't have the perfect classroom by any means, but overall I am pleased with how it comes together year after year.

I've had a few people ask me (most recently my student teacher) how I put everything together and if I spend a lot of money on my classroom. I'd say the money spending comes in waves. My first year I was trying to put together a classroom after not having a real job for about 8 months. (I was babysitting on the side and had graduation money to help pay the bills, but I pretty much had no extra cash for my classroom.) I will admit that during that summer before starting school I used my credit card to make a lot of my school purchases that I felt I needed to make before school began. I was actually able to pay all of it off with my first "big girl" paycheck, so I really don't consider that to be a bad decision. They key was to get creative and to prioritize what I needed immediately and what I could wait on.

Keep it simple and organized!

My best advice for new teachers (particularly those straight out of college) is to work with what you already have. (Sound familiar?)  I brought a lot of my old dorm storage, decor, and furniture into my classroom. Decor items like area rugs, shelving, lamps, chairs, and pillows are super cheap during back to school time and really make a classroom feel like home. After having spent 2 years in the dorms and 2 years in a little college apartment, I already had pretty much all of those items on hand. Most of those items I already had and didn't want in my home anymore (I was trying to grow up in my home decor). The custodians in my building are super awesome and shampoo my area rugs each year so they've stayed in great condition over the years! No extra money spent!

A chair from my college dorm days, clearance pillows, and a spray painted  Goodwill side table help to create a little reading area.

If you don't have that kind of stuff laying around, back to school sales are the time to get them. Dorm decor is pretty much ideal for a classroom and is already starting to pop up in stores. The stuff is really cheap (kids can be hard on stuff) and honestly most of my stuff has survived 5 years in my classroom. I also love the bright colors and that you can very easily coordinate your decor. It's also good to get creative with the items you find. For example, I use those plastic shower caddies for extra writing supplies.  Stores like Bed Bath & Beyond always have coupons that are great for grabbing these sorts of items.  Target and Wal-Mart also tend to have really good prices and colors on these sorts of items.

$3 plastic cubes make great shelving!
Thrift stores are also great for classroom supplies. They're definitely hit or miss, but I've had some good success finding small furniture items and books there. If you have a Goodwill or DAV in a nice neighborhood, hit it up! (Rich people tend to donate nice items to their local stores!)  I have one Goodwill store that I always hit up first because it always seems to get the nicest stuff. I've stocked up on chapter books in like-new condition for as little as 10 cents each and have also found brand new educational posters for 25 cents a piece.  At another Goodwill, I found that furniture and large items tend to be very cheap.  Remember my $2 chair?

More college dorm decor...  This was all stuff from my college roommate's room that she now uses in her 2nd grade classroom!

Garage sales are also a good place to look for items for your classroom. Once again, children's books can be picked up for very low prices and if you're buying large quantities you can always try to negotiate with the seller. Sometimes you have to look at the potential an item has and think about easy fixes that can make it work in your classroom.  You never know when you might hit the jackpot and end up at a teacher's house.  (My principal gave me the green light to take the leftovers from our giveaway table at school and I ended up selling TONS of teacher stuff in my garage sale last summer!)

Toy bin from the children's furniture section at  Target!

Depending on the type of posters you want to have up in your classroom, making your own is always a great option.  Now, this can get expensive, especially if you're a perfectionist like me...  If you add in the cost of poster boards, colored paper / cardstock, printer ink, etc. it may not necessarily be cheaper, but at least you can customize things to your needs and wants.  I searched online for posters from stores or ideas from other teachers and then made my own.  Certain things I prefer to make myself because I want the content to be specifically tied to our state and grade level standards.

Making your own posters is a great way to customize the look and content to your needs.

If you want to do a classroom theme, choose something that can translate easily to another grade level or that can be used from year to year.  My first few years I did a star theme in my classroom.  I chose this because I figured it would still be appropriate if I moved up or down grades and it was super easy to incorporate this theme on a budget.  My school has done building-wide themes the last 4 years and I've also tried not to go overboard with theme decor.  I try to limit my spending since I lot of this stuff is just used for the year and then ends up in storage.

If you're just starting out, remember that putting together your classroom is a process.  Throughout my first year I was constantly changing things around and buying new items as I figured out what worked.  Figure out what your priorities are to get the year started and then make a list of other things you may want later on.  Some stuff that I thought I needed or wanted, I ended up not needing after all!

Do you have any suggestions or tips on how to put together a classroom on a budget?

Let's Try Something New... (Like something for you to download!)

I've been meaning to try to load some documents to share for a while now and haven't had the patience to figure it all out. I'm considering venturing into the whole Teachers Pay Teachers thing, but I don't feel like anything I've made yet is all that cool. For now, I'm just going to try adding a few odds and ends here to the blog and see how that goes! So, here's my first attempt at a printable for you!
Reading Theme Planner.pdf

Long story short, I need to clean up some things on Google Docs from back when I was getting my Master's and so I'm using Scribd for the time being.  I actually liked Scribd from the couple times I've used it, so I may just stick with it!  Who knows!?!

I found this pin on Pinterest and was inspired to make my own planner along the same lines.  My two third grade colleagues and I are planning on doing themes next year to drive our reading instruction and have been coming up with a list of ideas.  The next step is to plot out when we want to do these themes!  Some will go with certain times of year or certain seasons, but others we can mix and match whenever and share resources.  With making the switch to Literacy First this year I've struggled a bit in breaking away from our reading series and inserting in as much non-fiction as they want.  (They want 60% non-fiction!  Eeeek!)

Anyway, I hope this comes in handy to some of you and hopefully I'll get more into posting some goodies like this soon!  I figure if I take the time to make something I should share it so that others can benefit from my hard work!

Happy Easter! (And Stuff I'm Loving Right NOW!)

Happy Easter!  He is risen!

I hope everyone has had a great Easter Sunday.  I've had a pretty good day myself...  I went to my old church for their service and then spent the afternoon with my family over at my grandparents' house.  We had another gorgeous day and the gym was closed for the holiday so I enjoyed a great walk outside to work off some of the yummy food my mom made.  I'm now enjoying some couch time with my DVR and catching up on my last few shows before the week starts again!

I have another week and a half or so out of my classroom, so I'm hoping to get a few more things accomplished and marked off my to-do list.  Here are the things I'd like to get accomplished this week:

  • Label and organize all of my folder games for reading and math and make copies of all of the accompanying worksheets.  (This has been an ongoing project I can never seem to get finished!
  • Work adding some of my newly found printables to my files.
  • Weed through the two random baskets / boxes of crap that have been taking up space in my filing cabinet drawer.
  • Weed through my teacher books and pull out ones to give away or put into my garage sale.
  • Work on filling out student data sheets in preparation for the end of the school year.
I've tried my best to stay out of the classroom as much as possible this past week, but most of what I want to get done this week involves being in the room.  I'm going to try to get as much done during specials when the kids are gone so I'm not causing too much of a ruckus.

I also wanted to share a couple things that I'm currently loving...  It's not all necessarily related to the classroom, but that's okay, right?  ; )

e-nuf is e-nuf
essie.com
Essie's "e-nuf is e-nuf"

I think this one was my first Essie nail polish that I bought last summer.  It's a super fun dark coral color.  I put it on my fingers last night and it looks much more red than I remember, but it's still a great color!  I've been fighting the urge to buy more nail polishes, so in the meantime I'm trying to use some of the ones I haven't worn in a while!

Everything Poppin' Patterns from CTP

I just plain love this collection of classroom decor and CTP just keeps coming out with more cute stuff!  I started a shopping cart of items I want and the total was less than $40.  That's not bad at all, right !?!  I've settled upon keeping this as my decor scheme for another few years since I already have a ton of this stuff and I know I'd get carried away decorating with another theme.  Check out everything Poppin' Patterns here and see what all I'm loving!
Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butter

Revlon Lip Butters

I hadn't really paid much attention to these until recently when a few other bloggers and You Tubers started posting about them.  I have a ridiculous collection of lip products and have really tried to not spent money on anymore.  I gave in, though, and purchased on in Strawberry Shortcake.  I love it!  They're a nice mix between a lipstick, gloss, and balm.  I have an Ulta coupon and plan on going there sometime this week and I'm pretty sure I'm going to get at least one more.  I like to keep products like this in my desk at school to give me a little pick-me-up during the school day.

Mio Energy

I hate to admit it, but I have a serious need for caffeine in the morning.  I've been trying to cut back on my pop consumption for several reasons and I'm not a big coffee or tea drinker, so I've been diggin' these things.  I picked up a 3-pack when I was at Sam's with my mom and have been alternating between two flavors all month and have yet to finish either bottle.  My mom and I popped into the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market today and discovered they have already come up with their own store brand version.  She picked up a flavor to try, but I passed today since I have 5 bottles up in my cabinet right now and they seem to last quite a while!

My Two New Super Cheap Shirts

Pink & white striped Gap top

Lace necklace J.Crew top in Strawberry

Okay, I have yet to actually receive either of these yet, so I really hope they work out and that I like them as much as I think I will.  I've been contemplating a short clothing shopping ban between my April and May paychecks, so for some reason in my mind that allowed me to buy as much as I could afford before my April paycheck arrives this week.  (Even I don't quite understand my logic.)  I don't buy much online, but I found both of these tops on major sale and was able to apply some discount codes to cut down the price even more.  Both shirts ended up being less than $7 each after discounts and the one from Gap shipped for free.  (I paid more to ship the J.Crew shirt than I paid for the actual shirt!)  We'll see how these work out size wise...  I tried on the one from Gap in black and white a while back, but ended up ordering this one a size smaller in a tall since talls were all that the pink was available in.  I can return that one if it doesn't work out, but the J.Crew shirt was "final sale" so I'm stuck with it.  I have yet to completely figure out my J.Crew size since I don't shop there a ton, so I went with the larger of my sizes there and am hoping for the best!

Mossimo® Womens Knit Maxi Dress - Black/White Stripe.Opens in a new window

My New Maxi Dress From Target

Despite the fact that I have a closet full of dresses in my spare bedroom, I decided I needed to buy some dresses for some upcoming events.  I bought one at Kohls and one at Banana Republic (that I wore today), and then I found this baby at Target on Friday.  Now, I rarely pay full price for anything, but I liked it so much I decided to try it on and, of course, I loved it on me!  I went on and bought it at regular price ($29.99) and decided to take the one from Kohls back since it was more expensive and less practical for everyday wear.  I'm glad I grabbed this one on Friday because I ended up back at Target Saturday afternoon and the rack was already cleared out!  I guess everyone waited until the last minute to do their Easter dress shopping!  I think I'm gonna wear it to school tomorrow with my denim jacket and my flat white sandals!  This one is definitely going to get a lot more wear than the dress I took back to Kohls and was $13 cheaper!

So, there are some of the things I'm loving right now!

What are you loving right now?
Any great finds this spring for yourself or for your classroom?

To Theme or Not To Theme?

Yes, it's getting to be that time of year when I'm kind of over the current school year and am already making plans for next year.  It's not that I'm giving up on this year or anything like that...  I'm just already looking forward to a fresh start.  I love that I'm in a career where I get a fresh start each August.  I'm not completely stuck doing everything the same year after year.  If you know me, you know I like change in my home, my wardrobe, and my classroom.  I can't keep things to same for too long before I get bored.

We've done school-wide themes the past 4 years...  Western, stars / space, jungle, and sports.  I like this, but only to a point.  Our new principal, who's been around for years before this as a teacher, has been surveying our staff about themes.  It sounds like we're leaning towards not having a school-wide theme next year.  I try not to spend a lot of money on theme decorations, but I do still have boxes of theme items I probably won't use ever again.  (Uh, western?  I may live in Kansas, but I am about as far from a cowgirl as you get.)  Ideas were thrown out to let teachers just do whatever they want or maybe select a grade level theme.

I'm trying to figure out what, if anything, I want to do with my classroom next year.  Why am I thinking about this already?  I like planning ahead and knowing what I'm looking for when I'm out shopping.  If I spot something on an amazing sale, I can snatch it at a good price.  I can also be lurking around on Pinterest and the blogs gathering up ideas as well.  Let's just admit, Pinterest has put me into idea overload and I need some time to just work on those projects!

Here are some of my ideas and "themes" so far and links to give you visuals:
If you haven't been able to tell already I'm not really into cutesy little animal or character decor schemes.  (Nothing against that kinda stuff...  It's just not my thing.)  I'm more of a pattern and color scheme girl.

So, friends, help me make some decisions!
What do you think I should do in my classroom next year?
Please give me your vote in the comments below!

Finally... Classroom Pictures!

Welcome to my classroom! I posted these pics to my Facebook account back in August and then never got around to posting them here! *fail* I love sharing these pics so I don't know what happened to make it so hard for me to just sit down and get these posted. I hope you enjoy the tour!

There really isn't any specific order to these, but I'll tell you a little about each one as we go.

This is one section of my classroom library. We're a Literacy First school / district so they're big on having classroom libraries that the students actually use. This shelf contains my fiction books. I've never really gotten around to really organizing and labeling my library to the extent I really want, but it'll happen one of these days.

This shelf had previously lived behind my teacher's desk, but when I rearranged the classroom it didn't fit anywhere near there. It fit over by my classroom library, though, and found a new home housing some reading supplies and some of my little teacher gifts from years past.

I can't remember off the top of my head where I found the inspiration for this fluency poster, but I loved it and had to make my own version. The kids refer to it a lot during their reading work stations.

This is my new listening center. I've never had a listening center before, but we have to have them now. I ended up getting a pretty nice one and even though it's a small space for sometimes a group of four kids it still works out quite nicely.

This is the view from the door. The room was all decked out for our open house the night before school started.
Our school did a team / sports theme this year, so this is my door decor. I had the banner made from Vista Print and the rest are just simple little die cuts in K-State colors!
Can you tell what my favorite team is? I love my Wildcats and I'm very obviously not afraid to show it.
Because I don't have much wall space I have to get creative with how I use space in my classroom. I use the door as our AR board and for the students' library cards and library bookmarks. It's actually really convenient for them to grab on the way in and out the door.

Here's part of my corner of the classroom. I found this printable through Pinterest and bought a cheap Wal-Mart frame for it.

More K-State goodies. Our new principal was a teacher in our building and a fellow KSU fan. I inherited a lot of his decorations when he was cleaning out his classroom at the end of the year.

These are our tool kits for Everyday Math. The curriculum calls for a lot of manipulatives to be available to the kids on a daily basis, so I have the organized for each table group. Overall it works out really well. I found these purple drawers at Big Lots for only $18!

I had been wanting to rearrange my classroom and move my desk to the opposite end of the classroom for several years, but one of the reasons why I didn't was because I was going to give up the shelving for all of my teacher books. I'd asked for another shelf last year, but didn't know if I would get one or not. Then, I couple days before school started I walked into my classroom and found this beauty waiting for me. It holds sooooooo much! I love it so much. Good organization and storage makes me happy!

Can you believe another teacher put this out in the hallway to get rid of? This is kind of the command center for classroom supplies. The colorful baskets are labeled for materials like pencils, pens, erasers, highlighters, and so on.

These little resource cards are made from printables I found online as well as stickers from Dollar Tree. I mounted everything on construction paper and laminated it so that they can be reused year after year.

Okay, I will admit this isn't the most attractive setup, but I love this unit. This comes from the kid's furniture department in Target and holds a bunch of random stuff like flashcards, counters, playing cards, dice, games, and books. You can find a very similar one here also from Target.

I needed more storage for my reading and math resources (mostly from my massive Lakeshore and Mardel shopping trip) so I dropped about $20 on these plastic cubes from Wal-Mart. Disclaimer: If you want these for the purpose of stacking, check to make sure they have the connecting part before you buy them in the store. The ones from Target were the same brand (but more fun colors), but they didn't connect and therefore stack properly. Back to the store they went.

This is where I post daily info and assignments, but for open house I had these cute little baseball notes where parents could take one to donate an item.

I hate clutter in the kids' desks so these book bins from Target help to take away part of that problem. I was lucky enough to snag 25 or 30 of these the first year Target carried them and got them for only $1 each. Now they run $2.50 each during back to school time.

This sitting area is an example of how you can create a little reading nook for very little money. The chair was purchased at Bed Bath and Beyond my sophomore year of college. The K-State pillows were 90% off at Linens N' Things when they were going out of business. The small pillows were from the $2.50 bin at Target. The table was a Goodwill find for $2.99 and I spray painted the scratched up red to back. Finally the rug (which you can't really see in this pic, but you can in others) was a Target sale item (less than $20 I believe) when I lived in the college dorms. I love that I have a designated reading area and I even more I love that I hardly spent any money putting it together!

This is my reading focus wall. Not really in action yet because it was before school started, but you get the idea. I love my Target pocket charts. Just glue on some magnet strips on the back and they're good to go on your magnetic white boards.

This is my computer area as well as my word wall. I really *really* need more space for a word wall, but this has to do the job. I love my Poppin' Patterns letters that I used on there and get tons of compliments on it!

Here's the lunch choice chart with the super cute library pockets I won from my post at Tommie's Tools last summer. You can read more about it here and follow the link to where she featured my idea. (PS ~ If you haven't been over to Tommie's Tools before you need to check out her page! She's got some super creative ideas! I love her page!)

My teacher area. It's more cluttered than I wish at times, but it's the best I can do. Don't you love the poster on the front of my desk? "Be a winner, not a whiner!"

This file organizer from Mardel is one of my favorite organization tools. I use it for a lot of copies, particularly things that I want the kids to have easy access to. I also have a smaller back on back behind my desk for easy access to folders and data. Here is the link to all of them on Mardel's website.

Finally, here is my version of a clip chart for behavior. I love the way it looks, but I'm not totally convinced this is the best behavior system for my current class. I talked about behavior management last summer in this post and linked to a lot of other sample clip charts. I may switch to another system at semester and try this one again with another class. I've ended up using some other school wide incentives for behavior this year and trying to do both just doesn't seem to make the whole clip chart system seem as effective. Oh well! That's the joy of teaching sometimes... We can try things and change or adjust based on the needs of our students!

I hope you enjoyed my classroom tour. Please leave a comment and feel free to ask questions about anything. My classroom is like a work of art that I am constantly making changes to and trying to improve, yet never seems to be finished!

Let's get crafty!

I mentioned in my previous post that I spent some time with my old college roommate that is also a teacher. She changed schools this year and her new school does a different theme with each grade level. I think this is a really cool idea, but changing things every year can be a pain and can also get expensive. My school has done themes 4 of my 5 years and it's been fun, but I've also learned not to go too overboard with my theme decor. For my friend's grade level, they had a candy theme. It's very cute, but as you might guess, there's not much already made that goes along with this theme. The teachers were very creative at coming up with cute ways to tie the theme into their decor. Another good friend of ours found this candy themed idea online, so off we went to one of my favorite places... Hobby Lobby! The lanterns were found in the party supply area and came in 3 packs with 3 different sizes per pack. Two of the packs were $6.99 and the other was $7.99 (it had a slightly larger sided lantern). We also purchased two rolls of cellophane, and two rolls of cute polka dot ribbon.

Making the "candies" was definitely a two-person job. We wrapped the lanterns twice in cellophane and then taped the seam and wrapped tape around the ends where the ribbon would eventually go. We had one "fatty" lantern that required more cellophane, but in the end it all worked out quite well! We made 9 candy lanterns altogether, hanging them in 3's in the classroom and outside the classroom doors.
Here you can see the candies floating above the reading area. Aren't they cute?!? I believe the total cost lingered below $40 and the lanterns can be unwrapped and used again with a non-candy theme. I love that they add a pop of color to the room and tie in to the theme without being over the top. We also concluded that with the candy lanterns in front of the window that purchasing / making little curtains was no longer necessary.

Clutter-Free Classroom: Sports Themed Classrooms

My school is doing a sports theme next year and to my surprise it's been a little more difficult than I'd anticipated to find cute ides for this theme. Well, our awesome friends at Clutter-Free Classroom have been doing a series on classroom themes and recently had this post on sports theme ideas! I love this!

School Theme-- Sports and Teamwork

Over the past three years, my school has selected a theme for the school year. Over the past couple years we've let the kids vote on themes and we get them involved in the theme selection process for the next school year. Rumor has it, next year's theme will be a sports / teamwork theme. This was actually an idea that I submitted and was my favorite out of the choices we came up with. I don't usually do a whole lot inside my classroom with the school theme, but sports and teamwork is such an easy on to incorporate that I'm considering doing a little bit more than usual. Here are some ideas I've found online that go with this *possible* (and hopeful) theme for next year.
